If you are able to receive messages BUT NOT SEND (GMail, Hotmail, Live, etc), the answer is simple :) Click Mail > Preferences > Accounts (select yours) > (select) Account Information Update to El Capitan, Yosemite is full of junk bugs and security holes. I hadn't changed anything and my Gmail is still coming through to Mac's Mail so not an issue with the Mail client.
