To see, try running Windows Update manually from the website to insure it can install patches.A brief search turned up forum postings at Microsoft.com from others with this problem. now it worked... After some tinkering and maybe updating the Windows Update Agent the computer updates just fine.

The CD-ROM is now working, there was a game in the drive that had clearly failed to load so the owner had abandoned it and forgotten the CD. I check the properties of the PC and it reflects windows XP with SP3.
