You may want to consider some updates, for security reasons if nothing else. Is the problem that Firefox opens a blank tab, or that it forces you to download the file? When I restarted FF it had reverted back to the default theme and some of my extensions had disappeared as well as bookmarks. Right now none of the PDF's open at all, so opening in Firefox or any other viewer would be preferred over not showing up at all.
