The server i copied it from is currently running 10.04 but it has been running for years so the original nrpe.cfg was probably from 8.04 or something. This was a quick fix, but this is not the solution. Full text and rfc822 format available. I'm running the RPM version which was installed via yum from the RPMForge repositories. When I run the command on the client all is well, but NRPE isn't communicating as it should as I demonstrated in the OP. Paul PS: pending?

The file is only written if the NRPE daemon is started by the root # user and is running in standalone mode. I certainly wouldn't recommend this on a production system! –Bart B May 31 '10 at 13:29 I know it's not a good idea, but it's a way to understand https://bugs.debian.org/411046 Here is a screenshot showing the Nagios web interface.
