It is possible to define metric spaces from pure topological concepts without the need to define a distance function? Can they ping the router? They keep that address until they are removed from the network or a time limit expires, after which they just ask for another address. You can not post a blank message. I can connect from iPad to my laptop though.

I also find the comment that you can't ping your Default Gateway odd, that's also typically a firewall issue.Just out of curiosity, have you tried a wired connection from that laptop
